Strandir isn’t a place many have heard of. It’s a secluded part of Iceland known and visited by a few, remaining as what we like to call "authentic Iceland". It’s the most untouched area of Iceland, the most unique and the most remote. The peace found at Strandir is unlike anywhere else and in summer when the midnight sunbathes in the sea of the fjords and the mountains surrounding stand so tall you will find a solitude like never before. Seals, birds and a few curious horses and sheep will welcome you along with the few remaining summer inhabitants in the charming little villages along the way.
This is a hiking adventure, a geothermal hot pool experience and a local culinary expedition. We will visit old historic sites and explore the trails that the settlers used the hike across when traveling in Iceland in the Viking times.
This is a truly unique experience, well off the beaten track and every day will greet you with a new adventure you wouldn’t experience anywhere else.
In the the morning we depart from Reykjavík setting off to the magical West fjords. The drive is very scenic and we will be treated to vast ocean views as we make our way to this secluded place. We will make a stop for lunch at the charming little fishing village of of Búðardalur right by its harbour. After crossing mountains and passing valleys we will start to see the first fjords. During the next hours you will have stunning mountains on one side and sea filled with islands on the other. During this time we will stop for some fresh air and a short hike in the beautiful Borgarhólmur area. There we will test our chases to see eagles that best in the hills. Eagles are the most common in the Westfjords in Iceland.
Our accommodation for the night is Hótel Djúpavík. In the evening when we have arrived we will have the chance to swim in a wonderful natural pool with breathtaking views over the Arctic Ocean.
Today is all about exploring the glorious setting we have arrived in. This time even more up close and personal. After breakfast we will set on a walk on the beach to let the energy of the nature sink in. We will then hop on our minibus and head further to visit what remains of a huge decayed herring factory from the early sixties. This place used to be full of life, laughter and love which though only lasted a few years as the herring disappeared. This time played a big role in Icelandic history and your guide will tell you stories of this well remembered time.
We will start to drive into Ófeigsfjörður where the road ends and a farm sits where only a few people live in the summertime. We will talk along the beautiful river of Hvalá e. Whale river and stop at the stunning waterfall Hvalárfoss that resides there. The hike is up the hill inside the fjord and the experience of sitting on top and looking over the fjord is like no other!
From here we can only continue on foot. There are no roads, no people just you, me and the ocean or the heath as far as the eye can see. Take a deep breath and enjoy the solitude. When we get back to Norðurfjörður we will have a chance to visit the magical Krossneslaug once again before having another great meal prepared by our hosts. We will spend another night in Hótel Djúpavík, located in beautiful surroundings.
Today we are checking out at the hotel and leaving Norðurfjörður behind to head back south. We start the tour quite slowly taking a short but stunning hike in the fertile fjord of Bjarnarfjörður. We will visit the village of Hólmavík where we will have our lunch and visit the Icelanders favorite the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery & Witchcraft. From the colorful village of Hólmavík we follow the coastline to the bottom of Hrútafjörður e. Ram fjord where we will make a stop at two places where boats used to sail from to America in the late 19th century. Now we are slowly getting closer to civilization again after going through the valley of Búðardalur again and taking a short mountain road, Rauðamelsheiði. We will save some time for a hike in the peacefulness of the wastelands giving us a chance to stretch our legs. During this hike we pass a couple of lakes filled with trout, usually you can even see them swimming through the water. The views are breathtaking and the wildlife is vivid and diverse when we have retuned to the lowlands both in Álftafjörður and Straumfjörður. We are back in Reykjavik around 20:00.
