Our Ring Road journey takes you off the beaten path and into the surreal volcanic landscapes of Landmannalaugar. As we get deeper into the Icelandic Highlands, we will pass by the notorious Hekla Volcano and surrounding lava-sculpted terrain.
Located in the center of the Highland region, this Mars-like area is one of the most unique attractions in Iceland. The Landmannalaugar basecamp is nestled in the geothermal valley of Fjallabak Nature Reserve. The protected area is surrounded by colorful, rhyolite mountains and steaming hot springs.
The multicolored mountains, black lava fields, serene lakes and streams create the perfect atmosphere for a nature trek. At the reserve basecamp we will take a quick rest and toilet break and grab a bite to eat.
We begin our 4-hour (approx. 9 km) Landmannalaugar hike through the vast Laugahraun Lava Fields and Vondugil Canyon. A sprawling area of dried magma, Laugahraun was formed by an eruption in 1477 CE.
The summit portion of our journey takes us up Brennisteinsalda, a colorful volcanic mountain. Painted with blue and black ash, red iron and green moss, it has been nicknamed “Sulphur Wave.”
We descend through the vivid green Graenagil Canyon, shaped by the geodynamic activity of volcanoes and glacial rivers. If time and weather permit we will hike Blahnukur, an approximately 60-000-year-old volcano. A popular spot for hikers, you can spot five glaciers from the summit.
Back at basecamp, we end our journey with a relaxing dip in a natural hot spring. Remember to bring your swimwear and a towel! We’ll spend the night in a charming hotel in Hella.
We begin our day trip with a scenic journey along the South Coast to another region of the Icelandic Highlands, Thorsmork Valley. On our drive, we’ll take a quick detour to the iconic Seljalandsfoss Waterfall with a cascade you can walk behind!
Thorsmork Nature Reserve sits at the bottom of the magnificent Eyjafjallajokull Volcano and Myrdalsjokull Glacier. A spectacular region of rugged wilderness and contrasting landscapes, hikers can observe glacial rivers, lush mosses, tall birch trees, ice-capped mountains and volcanic craters.
Reaching this hiking oasis requires traversing glacial rivers. Your experienced guide will drive you in a modified 4x4 Super Seep to Basar Cabin (basecamp).
From here we take off on our 6-8 hour Thorsmork tour up Fimmvörðuháls Mountain Pass. On this scenic 16-km trek, we will witness the otherworldly beauty of the valley
Along the way, we'll stop at the famous Magni and Modi volcanic craters, which were formed by the massive Eyjafjallajökull eruption of 2010. The view from the peak is outstanding. In nice weather we’ll be able to spot the Landmannalaugar Mountains.
The Thorsmork hiking tour is demanding and has an elevation of approximately 800 meters (2,624 feet) with a total length of 16 km (9.9 mi ). Climbers who reach the top, however, agree that the views of the Highlands are unbeatable. You won't want to forget your camera!
After our summit, we’ll descend down the same route and return to our Super Jeep.
Tonight’s accommodations will also be at our country hotel in Hella.
Guided by a local glacier expert, today we will hike the glacial landscapes of Sólheimajökull Glacier. The glacier tongue stretches out for 11 km (6.8 miles) from Iceland’s fourth-largest glacier, Myrdalsjokull.
Bilbo the Samoyed Puppy, our junior guide, has discovered some exciting features on this glacier that we want to share with you! Explore the intricate crevasses, moulins and sinkholes on the beautiful Solheimajokull Glacier, or “Home of the Sun.”
During the Sólheimajökull tour you will be introduced to the ins-and-outs of glacier hiking. This is a moderate walk suitable for people of average health and fitness levels. All safety and glacier hiking equipment and instructions are provided. Your guide will be there with you every step of the way to make sure you have a fun and safe hike!
Trek across a dreamy glacier wonderland on an unforgettable excursion. Along the way, your glacier guide will teach you interesting facts about the glacier, including the geology, how it was formed and the effects of climate change on the ice fields.
Take out your camera to capture the stunning blue ice walls decorated with layers of ash from ancient and recent volcanic eruptions. These features are only visible deep inside an Icelandic glacier!
On the way back, we make sightseeing stops at breathtaking waterfalls. Our detour starts at the whimsical Skógafoss Waterfall, the inspiration for dozens of folktales. We will also visit the picturesque Seljalandsfoss Waterfall on the Seljalands River, cascading down from a former coastline sea cliff.
Remember to bring: Warm undergarments (fleece/wool), layers, socks, a change of clothing and hiking boots. We also highly recommend you pack a bathing suit and towel
for the hot spring bathing. As meals are not included, customers should pack food, snacks and a water bottle for excursions.
If you don’t own all the suggested clothing, don’t worry. You can always rent sturdy hiking boots, waterproof jackets and pants during the booking process.
