We will look out for the majestic swirling colors of the northern lights. Hopefully, the aurora borealis will paint a canopy of color which will leave us gasping in wordless awe. With natural phenomena we can never be sure - on this tour uncertainty is all part of the excitement.
The traditional mountain lodge is cozy and welcoming. We relax, sharing life stories and days blessed with unforgettable memories. We become one team, preparing great food and eating together, making new friends and totally relaxing beneath the vast northern sky in the hot spring pool. We cannot wait to take you on this epic three day winter expedition tour!
We pick you up in Reykjavík and the excitements build as we set off on an adventure which will deliver some unforeseen challenges and magnificent opportunities. In these untamed highland landscapes, the heartbeat of nature sets the rhythm. The participants and staff blend together, and everyone plays an active part in overcoming the obstacles which come up. As we head towards the valley of Þjórsárdalur you will see great views of the volcano, Hekla, with its distinctive stepped-ridge cone shape. In the middle ages this volcano was feared above all others and said to be the gateway to hell. It last erupted in the year 2000. The journey to Landmannalaugar takes as long as it takes, winter driving is difficult. With our experienced staff, specially equipped Super Jeeps and your assistance we will make it through to Landmannalaugar. We heat our lodge and prepare dinner. The hot spring pool is nearby!
Many people like to start their day with a little hot spring bathing in the blissful Landmannalaugar pool. The soft mineral rich water which wells up through the Laugahraun lava field is sure to feel so good. We make and enjoy breakfast together in the charming mountain lodge. We take some time to check out the snow conditions and the preferences of our guests and plan our day. The possibilities are snowmobiling, hiking, exploring by Super Jeep and more hot spring bathing.
The colorful mountains around the area have mostly been formed from eruptions of sour magma from a volcano close to the nearby glacier, Torfajökull. This magma flowed from the largest magma chamber of its type in Iceland.Torfajökull is the second largest high-temperature geothermal area in the country.
After a day of outdoor adventures we prepare a delicious barbecue dinner, relax and enjoy life in the lodge. The hot spring pool is always just outside, blessed by the deep tranquility of evening. Will the northern lights dance their brilliant colors across a star-studded night sky?
Our final delicious breakfast together in the geothermal wonderland of Landmannalaugar! We will pack up and head on to the dam at Hrauneyjar where we stop for lunch. We then drive through the beautiful valley of Þjórsárdalur to the famous Golden Circle: Gullfoss waterfall (the Golden Falls), Geysir and Þingvellir National Park.
The magnificent Gullfoss cascade drops 32 meters in two stages of 11 and 21 meters as the powerful flow roars its way through the rugged canyon. Gullfoss is on the Hvítá (the White River) which is sourced from Langjökull, the second largest glacier in Iceland. The geothermally active valley of Haukadalur is home to Great Geysir, from which the English word to describe an erupting hot spring, Geyser, is derived. Great Geysir has not erupted for a long time. The active geyser nowadays is Strokkur who erupts great jets of boiling water and steam every few minutes, this is now the most active geyser in Iceland. We journey through the charming village of Laugarvatn on our way to Þingvellir National Park, the place where the Icelanders founded one of the first democratic parliaments in the world in 930 CE. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge runs through Þingvellir, creating a great rift valley where the tectonic plates have been moving apart.
