This tour offers you the ultimate winter wilderness adventure in the spectacular Icelandic Highlands. On this expedition tour your activities fit around the magnificent Icelandic nature, you really will feel you are at one with the stunning landscapes and mountains which surround you. We blend together as a team to make this a unique and special experience, hiking through the stunning mountains, bathing in the hot spring pool. We will look out for the majestic swirling colors of the northern lights. Hopefully, the aurora borealis will paint a canopy of color which will leave us gasping in wordless awe. With natural phenomena we can never be sure - on this tour uncertainty is all part of the excitement.
The traditional mountain lodge is cozy and welcoming. We relax, sharing life stories and days blessed with unforgettable memories. We become one team, preparing great food and eating together, making new friends and totally relaxing beneath the vast northern sky in the hot spring pool. We cannot wait to take you on this epic two-day winter expedition tour!
We pick you up in Reykjavík and the excitements build as we set off on an adventure which will deliver some unforeseen challenges and magnificent opportunities. In these untamed highland landscapes, the heartbeat of nature sets the rhythm. The participants and staff blend together, and everyone plays an active part in overcoming the obstacles which come up. As we head towards the valley of Þjórsárdalur you will see great views of the volcano, Hekla, with its distinctive stepped-ridge cone shape. In the middle ages, this volcano was feared above all others and said to be the gateway to hell. It last erupted in the year 2000.
We keep on driving through lava fields and vast scapes past colorful lakes such as Lake Froststaðavatn, Hnausapollur, and Ljótipollur e. Ugly Puddle. The journey to Landmannalaugar takes as long as it takes, winter driving is difficult. With our experienced staff, specially equipped Super Jeeps and your assistance we will make it through to Landmannalaugar. We heat our lodge and prepare dinner and relax after the day in a little hot spring in the blissful Landmannalaugar pool. The soft mineral rich water which wells up through the Laugahraun lava field is sure to feel so good.
The northern lights await for us in the evening!
We start the day by enjoying breakfast together in the charming mountain lodge, hotel Hrauneyjar. Then we head out for the first stop of the day at the photogenic Hjálparfoss e. Helping Falls.
Next up, one of Iceland highest waterfall the stunning Háifoss waterfall that thrust down in a narrow drop. Now it is time for some history at an old turf farm that is called Stöng e. Pole, where you will be taken back in time and get to know the Vikings.
More waterfalls await for us, the Sigöldufoss and Urriðafoss waterfalls in Thjórsárdalur Valley, that lies between Mt. Búrfell and Mt. Skriðufell alongside the river Thjórsá surrounded by stunning landscape such as Iceland biggest known lava field Thjórsá Lava.
After 2 days of incredible sights and experiences, we will make our way back into Reykjavík.
- Warm layers of clothes, such as wind and rainproof outer shells.
- Warm wool socks, hats and gloves, thermal or wool middle layer and inner layer.
- Sturdy and waterproof hiking boots are essential and it is good to have slippers for the lodge.
- Your bathing suit and a towel!
