LAKI TO NÚPSTAÐASKÓGAR BACKPACKING TREK
For all trekking enthusiasts we have this spectacular Five Day Trek in Vatnajökull National Park. It's characterized by its wild and quiet environment as it's known only to few people. We start in the Laki volcanic area and over the next five days make our way over mountain ranges, glaciers, rivers and sands until Nupstadaskogur, a little oasis between the large rivers flowing from Vatnajökull Glacier. Each day involves about 8 hours of trekking, and each night we set up our camp with great views overlooking the vast wilderness of the area. There are no roads anywhere close to our hiking route, so we carry all we need in our backpacks, including: tents, stoves and food. Laki eruption of 1783 is one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history. And although it was not an enormous explosion which could be associate by many people with giant eruptions, it did have a profound impact on people living around the entire Northern Hemisphere for years afterwards. The direct impact the eruption had on the Earth´s climate is still debated and widely researched topic. This is one of Iceland's greatest trekking routes, a world class nature experience.
Day 1: REYKJAVIK-LAKI: LAVA FIELDS
Meeting point is Hafnarstræti 20 at Iceland Excursion office at 7:00 am. We take time to make sure the backpacks are packed properly and we have everything we need before we start the 5 hour scenic drive close to Laki volcanic area. We set up the first camp by a series of waterfalls.
